Where pipes actually burst in GTA homes
The classics: copper lines in uninsulated exterior walls, hose bibs left connected through the first hard freeze, supply lines above garages and in attic runs, and aging braided connectors under sinks and behind toilets. Cold snaps after mild spells are our busiest nights of the year — the pattern is that predictable.
Water travels; we follow it with meters
Water from a second-floor pipe shows up in the basement, having wet every layer between. The visible stain is never the full extent. We trace the migration path with thermal imaging and pin meters, open only the cavities that are actually wet, and set drying so trapped water does not become a mold claim in August.
Frozen but not burst yet? Even better
If a line is frozen but has not split, careful thawing with the main valve staged can save the whole event. We coordinate licensed plumbers for the thaw and repair, stand by for any release, and check the surrounding cavities afterward — a hairline split often leaks slowly rather than dramatically.
